Privacy Policy
The short version
- Your camera video is analysed on your iPhone. We do not upload, store or see your live camera feed, your recordings or the videos you pick from your library.
- No account. You never sign up or log in.
- Your pet profile and recordings stay on your device unless you choose to share or save them somewhere else.
- We use Firebase (Google) for app analytics and crash reports, and RevenueCat to manage subscriptions. Apple handles all payments.
- No ads, no selling of data, and no cross-app tracking.
- Captions and personality results are for fun only.
1. Who we are
Pet Motion (the “App”) is published by Ashley Technology Limited, a company based in Hong Kong SAR (“Ashley Technology”, “we”, “us”). We are responsible for the personal data described in this policy. Under the EU and UK GDPR we are the “controller”; under Hong Kong’s Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (Cap. 486) we are the “data user”.
2. What stays on your device
The App’s main features run entirely on your iPhone. The data below is processed locally and is not sent to us or to any of our service providers.
Camera
When you open the camera screen, the App asks for camera permission. Live frames are analysed on your device using Apple’s built-in Vision framework and small machine-learning models that ship inside the App. The analysis estimates your pet’s posture and movement, notices common objects in the scene, and checks whether a person, hand or lap is in the frame, so it can choose a caption. This is not face recognition and it does not identify anyone. Frames are discarded after analysis unless you are recording.
Microphone
The App asks for microphone permission only the first time you tap Record. Audio is captured only while a recording is in progress, and only to add sound to that clip. If you decline, clips are saved without sound.
Videos you choose from your library
If you pick a video to replay, the App uses Apple’s system photo picker. The App receives only the one video you select and has no access to the rest of your photo library. The video is copied to the App’s temporary storage and analysed on your device.
Recordings
Clips you record (with the caption overlay and a small Pet Motion watermark) are saved in the App’s private storage on your device. You can delete them in the App at any time. If you use the iOS share sheet to send a clip to another app, save it to Photos or post it online, the copy you share is handled by that destination and its own terms, not by us.
Pet profile
The setup questionnaire collects your pet’s species, breed, name, caption language and personality traits. This profile is stored only on your device and is used to personalise captions. It is not included in analytics and is not sent to us.
Your iPhone’s own backups (iCloud or a computer) may include App data, depending on your Apple settings. Apple handles those backups under its own privacy policy.
3. What we collect
To run, improve and support the App, a limited amount of data is sent to the service providers below. Some of it may count as personal data in some places, even though it is not tied to your name or email.
App analytics: Firebase Analytics (Google)
- A random app-instance identifier and a Firebase installation identifier
- Device model, iOS version, App version, language, and approximate location (such as country) inferred from your IP address
- How the App is used: for example, onboarding steps completed, screens and features opened, paywall views, and the start, completion or cancellation of a purchase or free trial
This data does not include your videos, audio, photos, pet name or pet profile.
Crash reports: Firebase Crashlytics (Google)
If the App crashes or hits a serious error, a crash report is sent. It includes the technical error details, device model, iOS version, App version, the App’s state at the time, and an installation identifier.
App settings: Firebase Remote Config (Google)
The App fetches configuration settings from Firebase. This uses an installation identifier and basic device and App information.
Subscriptions: RevenueCat
RevenueCat manages subscription status for us. It receives a random, anonymous customer ID created on your device; your App Store purchase details (such as product, price, currency, purchase and renewal dates, and trial status); basic device and iOS information; and your IP address and country. Apple processes all payments. We never see your card details or your Apple Account email address.
Feedback you send in the App
If you use the in-app feedback or “Contact Us” form, your message (limited to 100 characters) and any topic tags you pick are sent to us through Firebase Analytics. The message is not linked to your name or email, so we cannot reply to it. Please do not include personal information in it. If you would like a reply, email us instead (see Contact us).
Ratings
The App may show Apple’s standard rating prompt. Apple handles any rating you give.
If you email us
If you contact us by email, we receive your email address and whatever you include in your message. We use it only to reply to you and keep a record of the request.
4. What we do not do
- We do not upload your camera feed, recordings, library videos, audio or pet profile.
- We do not require or offer an account.
- We do not show ads or use advertising SDKs.
- We do not ask for App Tracking Transparency permission, so iOS does not make your advertising identifier (IDFA) available to the App or its service providers. We do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
- We do not sell your personal information, or “share” it for cross-context behavioural advertising (as those terms are defined in California law).
- We do not collect your precise location, contacts, health data or photo library.
5. Why we use data (legal bases)
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on these legal bases:
| Purpose | Data | Legal basis (GDPR Art. 6(1)) |
|---|---|---|
| Provide and restore your subscription | RevenueCat and App Store purchase data | Performance of a contract (b) |
| Understand how the App is used and improve it | Firebase Analytics data | Legitimate interests (f): improving a small app that we are responsible for |
| Fix crashes and keep the App secure and stable | Crashlytics and Remote Config data | Legitimate interests (f) |
| Read and act on in-app feedback and emails | Feedback text and tags, email messages | Legitimate interests (f) |
| Keep tax, accounting and legal records | Purchase records, correspondence | Legal obligation (c) |
Camera and microphone use is controlled by the iOS permissions you grant. You can withdraw them at any time in iOS Settings. Where we rely on legitimate interests, you can object (see section 9).
6. Who we share it with
- Service providers that process data on our behalf, under contract:
- Google (Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics, Remote Config): Firebase privacy information
- RevenueCat, Inc. (subscription management): RevenueCat Privacy Policy
- Apple, which distributes the App and processes your purchases under Apple’s Privacy Policy.
- Authorities or other parties when the law requires it, or when needed to protect our rights, users or the public.
- A buyer or successor if our business or the App is sold, merged or restructured. This policy would continue to protect your data.
7. International transfers
We are based in Hong Kong. Our service providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, these transfers rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or other mechanisms our providers offer.
8. How long we keep it
- On-device data (recordings, pet profile, settings): until you delete it in the App or delete the App.
- Analytics and in-app feedback events: up to 14 months at the event and user level. After that, only aggregated reports that cannot identify you are kept.
- Crash reports: about 90 days.
- Subscription and purchase records: while your subscription is active, and afterwards for as long as tax, accounting or other legal rules require. For example, Hong Kong tax law generally requires business records to be kept for 7 years.
- Emails with us: as long as needed to deal with your request, and then up to 2 years unless the law requires longer.
9. Your choices and rights
Choices you can make now
- Turn camera or microphone access on or off: iOS Settings › Pet Motion.
- Delete individual recordings in the App, or edit your pet profile from Settings.
- Delete the App to remove all of its on-device data. A reinstall starts with a new analytics identifier.
- Manage or cancel a subscription: iOS Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions.
Your legal rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- EEA / UK (GDPR): access, correct, delete, restrict or port your personal data; object to processing based on legitimate interests; withdraw consent; and complain to your local data protection authority.
- California and other US states with privacy laws: know what we collect, get a copy, correct it, delete it, and opt out of sale, sharing or targeted advertising (we do none of these). You can use an authorised agent, and we will not treat you differently for using your rights.
- Hong Kong (PDPO): request access to, and correction of, your personal data. We may charge a fee that is not excessive for a data access request, as the Ordinance allows.
To make a request, email info@ashleytech.com with the subject “Pet Motion privacy request”. Because there are no accounts, we may need details to find your data, such as the Apple order ID from your App Store receipt email and the approximate purchase date. We will reply within the time the law requires: generally one month under the GDPR, 45 days under California law, and 40 days under the PDPO. Analytics identifiers are random and not linked to your name or email, so we may not be able to match that data to you. Deleting the App stops further collection.
10. Children
The App is a general-audience entertainment app. It is not directed at children under 13, or under 16 where local law sets a higher age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Security
Your videos, recordings and pet profile never leave your device through the App. They are protected by iOS app sandboxing and your device passcode. Data sent to our service providers travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). No system is perfectly secure, but we limit what we collect so there is less to protect.
12. Captions are for entertainment
Pet Motion’s captions, dialogue and personality results are generated for fun. They are not a scientific, veterinary or behavioural assessment of your pet. The App does not collect or produce health information about your pet or about you. If you are concerned about your pet’s health or behaviour, please talk to a veterinarian.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the App or the law changes. We will post the new version here with a new version number and effective date. If a change is significant, we will also let you know in the App or on this page before it takes effect.
