What can Rock Identifier Stone Scan identify?
The app identifies a wide range of natural specimens from a single photo, including:
- Rocks (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic)
- Crystals and minerals
- Gemstones (rough and polished)
- Fossils
For each scan you get three ranked guesses, each with a confidence score, so you can see the most likely match as well as close alternatives.
How does the AI identification work?
When you take or upload a photo, the app sends the image to an AI model trained to recognise the visual characteristics of rocks, minerals, crystals, gemstones and fossils — things like colour, texture, crystal form, lustre and structure.
The AI returns its three best guesses ranked by confidence. To help you confirm the result yourself, each guess includes reference photos to compare against and, where relevant, a heads-up about common look-alikes.
How accurate is it?
The app is a strong starting point for learning and hobby use, but no photo-based identifier is perfect. Accuracy depends a lot on photo quality, lighting and how distinctive the specimen is — a polished gem or a weathered rock can be harder to call than a well-formed crystal.
That's why we show three ranked guesses, confidence scores, reference photos and look-alike warnings: they're there to help you make the final judgement. Results are for education and hobby use and are not a substitute for a professional geological or gemological appraisal.
Tips for getting the best results
- Use good, even lighting and avoid harsh glare or strong shadows.
- Fill the frame with the specimen and keep the camera steady and in focus.
- Shoot against a plain, neutral background.
- If the first result looks off, try another angle or a freshly broken/cleaned surface.
Is the app free, or is there a subscription?
Rock Identifier Stone Scan is free to download. Some features may be offered through an optional subscription or in-app purchase. Any pricing, free trial and renewal terms are shown clearly in the app before you commit.
Billing, renewals, cancellations and refunds are handled by the App Store or Google Play under their standard terms. You can manage or cancel a subscription at any time in your Apple or Google account settings.
Does it work offline?
AI identification needs an internet connection, because the photo is analysed by our AI service in the cloud. You'll need to be online to scan a specimen and get results.
Scans you've already saved into your collections remain available on your device for browsing, even without a connection.
What happens to my photos? Is my data private?
Photos you scan are used to generate identification results. Identification is performed using AI processing, which may involve trusted third-party service providers.
We recommend you don't upload photos that contain sensitive personal information or images you don't have permission to use. Full details on what we collect, how it's used and how to request deletion are in our Privacy Policy.
How do I save scans into collections?
After a scan, save the result and it's added to your collection on the device. You can organise your finds into collections to build a personal library of the rocks and crystals you've identified — handy for cataloguing a shelf, a trip or a growing hobby collection.
Saved scans are stored locally on your device. You can remove individual items or clear data using the in-app controls.
Can I use this for professional appraisal or buying gems?
No. Rock Identifier Stone Scan is built for education, wellness and hobby use. AI identification and any market-value references are general information only — they are not professional geological, gemological, appraisal, investment or safety advice, and market values shown are not guaranteed sale prices.
For anything involving a significant purchase, valuation or safety decision, please consult a qualified professional.
How do I delete my data or manage permissions?
You can delete locally stored data — such as saved scans and collection records — using the in-app delete controls, or by uninstalling the app. You can also turn camera and photo permissions on or off in your phone's settings, though some features won't work without them.
To request deletion of personal information tied to support requests or server-side records, email us with the subject line "Rock Identifier Data Deletion Request". See the Privacy Policy for full details.
